PROLOGUE

The beginning of a heartbreak

A woman lay curled beneath the heavy blanket, her bare skin still tingling from the warmth of the night before—the night that had felt like magic, like something real. Her body ached, but it was a sweet pain, one that echoed the closeness she had shared with the man beside her. For the first time in a long while, a flicker of hope danced quietly in her chest.

Across the room, the man rose from the bed, half-naked and silent. He walked to the armchair in the corner, picked up his clothes, and began dressing without a word. The rustle of fabric was the only sound between them. As he buttoned up his shirt, the woman slowly turned, her eyes tracing the lines of his back.

She pulled the blanket around her naked form and sat upright, a wince escaping her lips as the soreness reminded her of what had passed between them. Her fingers tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, her cheeks flushed—not with regret, but with the quiet vulnerability of someone who had let down every wall.

Then he turned.

His face was cold—eyes unreadable, jaw clenched, as if he were sculpted from stone. He reached for his blazer, and for a breathless second, she thought he might say something that would match the warmth of last night.

But instead, his words landed like a blade.

“Forget everything that happened last night.”

Her heart faltered, the fragile hope inside her stilling.

Then he added, without a trace of softness,

“It was just a moment of weakness.”

In that instant, something inside her shattered. A soundless scream echoed in the chambers of her heart as it broke into pieces too small to gather. She didn’t cry, didn’t move—only stared at him with eyes that no longer held light.

Without another glance, he walked out, leaving behind not just silence, but a woman whose dreams had crumbled in the wake of a single night and two cruel sentences.

In the vast, dimly lit living room of the mansion, two figures stood frozen in silence. The only sound that filled the space was the sound of their breath—heavy, uneven, thick with all the unspoken emotions that surged between them.

Nandani stood still, her gaze fixed on the man before her. In her eyes flickered a fragile spark of hope, shimmering beneath the film of unshed tears. Her hands trembled slightly at her sides, her heart thudding painfully in her chest. She had come here with the courage to speak, to fight—for him, for them.

Rudra, however, stood stiff, his face carved in stone. His jaw was clenched, his fists tight at his sides, the veins on his arms straining against his skin. He wouldn’t meet her eyes—not yet.

Her voice broke the silence, soft but desperate.

“I love you, Rudra. Please... don’t do this,” she pleaded, her voice quivering as the tears finally slipped down her cheeks.

He looked down at the floor for a brief moment, as if gathering something within himself, and then slowly lifted his gaze to hers. When he spoke, his voice was cold—steady but painfully devoid of emotion.

“I can’t love you, Nandani. I never can.”

The words hit her like a slap. Her breath caught in her throat. For a moment, the world felt still—too still, like the calm before a storm that never ends.

Rudra turned away then, his footsteps heavy as he moved toward the staircase. Just as his foot touched the first step, a single tear escaped his eye. He didn’t look back, didn’t falter, but his voice rang out once more—softer this time, but final.

“It’s late. You should go back to your house.”

And with that, he disappeared into the shadows of the corridor, leaving Nandani behind—shattered.

She fell to her knees, her sobs echoing through the hollow mansion, her heart unraveling with each breath. The hope she had clung to crumbled in her chest, and all that remained was pain.

~~

The grand mansion was glowing, adorned like a bride in celebration. Every corner sparkled with lights and flowers, echoing the joy of a wedding meant to be remembered. In the center of it all, she walked slowly down the wedding pavilion, every step graceful, every eye on her.

Draped in a resplendent red lehenga, embellished with intricate gold embroidery, her beauty was ethereal—like a dream carved into reality. Every ornament adorning her body shimmered under the lights, making her look like the perfect bride.

And yet… she wasn’t smiling.

Because the man she loved wasn’t the one waiting for her at the altar.

He stood among the guests, his daughter nestled in his arms, her tiny hands clutching his collar as if she too sensed the heaviness in the air. The little girl didn’t understand everything, but her heart knew something was wrong. The woman she had started to call "Mumma" was walking toward someone else, and not toward them.

His arms tightened around his daughter, pulling her closer to his chest. His face was still, almost cold, but his eyes—those betrayed him. Silent tears threatened to fall, but he held them back with all the strength he had. He couldn’t allow himself to break. Not here. Not now.

The woman he loved was about to marry another man, and he—he was standing there, helpless, forced to watch her slip away. Not because he didn’t love her, but because a promise—an old, suffocating promise—kept him chained.

A promise that demanded sacrifice. A promise that ripped apart his happiness.

His world, which had begun to bloom with the colors of love, was wilting back into a garden of thorns. The warmth he had started to feel was slipping through his fingers like sand. He could already feel the coldness creeping in.

Soon, he would become the ruthless man everyone knew him as—the one who never smiled, never softened, never felt.

His daughter, who had found the comfort of a mother’s embrace after years, would once again be motherless. The light that had entered their lives would disappear behind closed doors and vows not meant for them.

There would be no one to read his silences, no one to understand the grief he hid behind his eyes.

The family they had started to become… would be shattered before it ever truly formed.

And once again, he and his daughter would be left alone—with aching hearts and empty arms.
